March/April 2021

Does anyone else feel like they’ve been on a rollercoaster ride over the past year? From lockdowns and restrictions to WFH and Zoom calls – these are all things we have learned to adapt to. Throw wedding planning into the mix, and it’s incredible that we’ve made it through!

What has been a silver lining for me in these utterly bonkers times is seeing how the Essex wedding industry has taken everything the pandemic has thrown at it in its stride. Tales of companies diversifying, volunteering and sending homemade presents to their couples have put such a smile on my face and make me proud to support our wedding superstars. You may have even heard me interviewed on BBC Essex recently, chatting about how creative our local wedding industry is! If you want to sing from the rooftops about how wonderful your big-day suppliers have been throughout date changes, postponements and last-minute micro-weddings, then we’d love to hear from you.

In this issue, we aim to help you get that to-do list ticked off, with top tips from local experts in our Planning SOS feature (page 58), our round-up of the best wedding venues with outdoor spaces (page 19) and some serious gown inspiration (page 56) courtesy of our fashion editor, Claire Ridley.

Old Brook Barn

Positioned in the picturesque village of Navestock, Old Brook Barn is a 17th-century barn within 23 acres of quintessentially English countryside. Accessed via a charming timber bridge, groups can enjoy views across the meadow field, a secret garden for celebrations and a natural brook. A secluded courtyard is positioned to the front of the building and is furnished with a gazebo, rustic bar area and characterful timber furniture.

Step inside the barn, and visitors find gorgeous original features, exposed beams, high ceilings and carved-wood detailing but with the benefit of modern lighting and a PA system. The Minstrel’s Gallery overlooks the Main Hall and opens on to a wonderful south-facing balcony.

The Secret Garden is an al fresco spot for couples to say their vows with its manicured-hedge perimeter, impeccable lawns and attractive gazebo. Smaller outdoor ceremonies are suited to The Courtyard. Inside, The Barn and Minstrel’s Gallery are both stunning locations for ceremonies.

The Secret Garden and The Courtyard are ideal places to treat loved ones to canapés and a glass of Pimm’s on warm days, while The Barn and Minstrel’s Gallery are great indoor options.

The Main Hall has idyllic views, and furnished with round tables and chiavari chairs, it’s the perfect setting to enjoy a delicious wedding breakfast from its caterers (www.stockandbailey.co.uk and www.limeberrycatering.co.uk).

Bridal tanning tips and advice from luxury tanning brand, That'so

Everyone wants to look their best on their wedding day and for brides in particular, this is the day you want to look and feel the best version of yourself – your hair, skin and full wedding outfit looking perfect. Tanning can be a scary thing for brides running up to the big day, where you can feel unsure what tan to apply and how to apply it so that it looks flawless and is in no way patchy. It's easy to be put off in the fear it'll rub off onto the wedding dress, however, when prepped and applied correctly, a self-tan can look incredible, giving you a gorgeous sun-kissed glow for your big day.
