March/April 2021

Does anyone else feel like they’ve been on a rollercoaster ride over the past year? From lockdowns and restrictions to WFH and Zoom calls – these are all things we have learned to adapt to. Throw wedding planning into the mix, and it’s incredible that we’ve made it through!

What has been a silver lining for me in these utterly bonkers times is seeing how the Essex wedding industry has taken everything the pandemic has thrown at it in its stride. Tales of companies diversifying, volunteering and sending homemade presents to their couples have put such a smile on my face and make me proud to support our wedding superstars. You may have even heard me interviewed on BBC Essex recently, chatting about how creative our local wedding industry is! If you want to sing from the rooftops about how wonderful your big-day suppliers have been throughout date changes, postponements and last-minute micro-weddings, then we’d love to hear from you.

In this issue, we aim to help you get that to-do list ticked off, with top tips from local experts in our Planning SOS feature (page 58), our round-up of the best wedding venues with outdoor spaces (page 19) and some serious gown inspiration (page 56) courtesy of our fashion editor, Claire Ridley.

Baddow Park House

Couples tying the knot here have a vast expanse of gardens, terraces and parkland at their disposal, which has been designed to flow from the venue and maximise any al fresco elements to the day. The exclusive-use Baddow Park House is a stylish sanctuary allowing parties to explore their surroundings undisturbed.

The quintessentially English country house retains its original charm while offering incredibly high levels of comfort, style and attention to detail. Following an extensive refurbishment, it has relaunched as a private country venue with a sumptuous bridal suite and nine elegantly furnished guest bedrooms.

For smaller weddings, couples should consider the oak-panelled Oak Room (40 guests) or the beautifully light Drawing Room (80 guests), which offers stunning views across the parkland. The breathtaking Orangery holds up to 150 loved ones, while to-beweds can also make the most of the perfectly crafted pavilion to say their vows outside.

Couples will love the sunset views over the vineyard at the rear of the house, while enjoying a delicious barbecue or pizza from The Log Shed Bar. As the sun sets, step into the whimsical woodland to enjoy toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate around the fire pit.

There are many brides who will be looking to make a sustainable choice with their wedding dress purchase, and Essex brides can do so while also supporting a fantastic cause. Lady McAdden Breast Screening Trust has had to take the sad decision not to renew its lease for its Leigh-on-Sea premises, because of the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. However, the trust has a temporary residence in Elmsleigh Drive, which houses hundreds of dresses and suits.
