My husband Scott and I were married at Gosfield Hall back in 2008, and, even though we only live five miles from the venue, we'd never been back. I'd always followed the venue on Facebook, and one day earlier this year saw them advertising a Dinner Date Evening for the 18th June. Including a three-course meal, you were also able to wander the venue at your leisure. It was the perfect chance to reminisce – so I quickly contacted the venue to reserve our table for two.
We arrived at 6pm and were keen to look around. I'm pleased to reveal that Gosfield Hall is just as stunning as we'd both remembered 11 years ago! The Queen's Gallery where we said our vows actually brought a tear to my eye – and the bridal suite really is as huge as we remember! We also took in the landscaped grounds, the library – where guests can rest their feet and enjoy a refreshing drink – and the bar and dance floor, all of which are just as stunning as we recalled.
Before we knew it an hour had gone by, and we were being served prosecco or mocktails along with a selection of delicious canapes. Wine and cheese tasting had also been set up, giving guests who'd not yet married at the venue the chance to sample some red and white variations. We joined in – well it would have been rude not to…
At 8pm we were called upstairs to the Ballroom for dinner, where we were entertained by rat pack singer Lewis Simply Swing (https://www.facebook.com/LewisSimplySwing/). There were a few couples also seated as twos, but what I also liked was how many bride and grooms-to-be had brought their family along for the experience. Our starters were swiftly brought to the table – I'd chosen the prawn and crayfish tian with avocado and Marie rose sauce, and my husband opted for the mozzarella and rocket salad with tomato and chilli salsa. The mains were just as delicious and the presentation to detail was excellent. Our roasted sea bream with garlic cocotte potato and broad bean salsa verde was exceptional, and was served with roast potatoes and an assortment of fresh seasonal vegetables. I must admit I did get food envy when I saw some other guests enjoy the roast beef, complete with humungous homemade Yorkshire puddings!
Dessert is something my husband never orders, so I'd convinced him to opt for the New York-style cheesecake – so I could secretly eat some of his as well as my own! I was in for a disappointment, though, as he polished off the lot! Luckily for me my chocolate and salted caramel brownie with dark chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream perfectly hit the spot.
Suitably stuffed, we retired downstairs for one last drink while waiting for our taxi home. It was such an enjoyable experience, and I'd highly recommend it – both for brides looking for an Essex venue to tie the knot, and for couples who've already married there and want to enjoy a romantic night reminiscing.
