January/February 2021

Well, 2020 was a year we won’t forget in a hurry! I know we’re not out of the woods, but I feel like as we wake up to a new year, blinking into the January light, there’s renewed hope and excitement for the future. I bought myself two new outfits for weddings I had in the diary last year, which have been left hanging in the wardrobe, and I’m quietly confident I’ll get to pull them out in 2021!

So how are you finding wedding planning during a pandemic? I know it’s been a tough ride, but I hope the fact that An Essex Wedding has been here, celebrating the best of the county’s wedding industry, has helped. We will always bang the drum for local indie businesses, they’ve weathered the storm and supported their couples throughout, now’s the time to support them in return.

For those of you who are newly engaged over the festive period and Valentine’s Day – congratulations and welcome! We’ve got an epic issue for you, including venue styling tips for those whose plans have changed dramatically (page 61), a round-up of beautiful venues in and around my hometown of Braintree (page 19), and a celebration of photography that captures the essence of what we love about big days (page 55). We love to showcase reader weddings (from page 34), so get in touch if you’d like to see yours featured!

Cressing Temple Barns

Nestled between Braintree and Witham are the beautiful Grade I listed Cressing Temple Barns. Complementing the Knights Templar-built barns is an idyllic restored Tudor walled garden, which provides a perfect backdrop for photographs with its arbour, viewing platform and trickling water feature. The 13th-century barns are steeped in history and rustic charm, with ancient timbers and brickwork providing a wow-factor setting.

Ceremonies can be held in two of the barns for up to 200 guests. The Wheat Barn has a viewing platform for amazing aerial photos, while the Barley Barn provides a blank-canvas space with its hard floor, wooden timbers and exposed brickwork. Outdoor weddings (100 guests) are hosted in the Gardener’s shelter and adjoining orchard from April to mid-July, and a wet-weather option will be provided if needed.

In the evening, parties move to the Evening Barn and courtyard – a great party spot for a DJ or live entertainment.
