Meet Essex wedding photographer Beth Dowdell

Tell us about your wedding photography business...
I am extremely fortunate that my business encompasses a range of fields within photography. Its diversity allows me to work with so many incredible families and businesses, as well as other freelancers and suppliers. It also provides me with the opportunity to collaborate with people across many different platforms.

The time I have spent with models in a studio environment has enhanced my ability to direct and encourage those less confident in front of the camera. The result: relaxed and natural photos. I pride myself on being able to take elements from each aspect of my business and apply them to others. I'm personable, approachable and offer friendly advice if you need me to! 

What's your background and why did you launch your business?
My love for the creative arts started at an early age and shaped my education. In 2014, I graduated from university with an upper second class honours in Fashion, Media and Promotion and was listed as a photography finalist at Graduate Fashion Week.

I was fortunate to commence a role as an in-store visual merchandiser at a fashion high street retailer shortly after graduating. However, I felt uninspired with the position, and needed something to take me on an adventure. I longed to capture moments, important stepping stones in peoples' lives. I decided that creating my own business was the path for me.

What's your top tip for couples looking for a wedding photographer?
Pre-wedding or engagement sessions! A lot of people find the idea of being photographed all day a little daunting. An engagement session allows the couples to build a personal relationship with the photographer and develop a confidence in front of the camera. I always receive the same response when a couple view their gallery, "Oh wow! Beth, they're actually really nice!" – I laugh every time, it feels like a back-handed compliment, but it's one that I'm happy to take!

What's your favourite type of wedding to work on?
It may sound a little cliché, but I'm simply a fan of all weddings (bold or intimate). I love traditional aspects, but also real modern personal twists that emphasise a couple's personality. It is always an exciting and special day! I feel very privileged that I am able to capture the smaller moments and intricate details that could quite easily be forgotten during all of the excitement. 

What's the most common question couples ask you?
I tend to be asked two common questions. The first "Do you direct us?" and the second "Do you retouch?" This is one of the reasons that I think it is so important to have a face-to-face conversation before booking your photographer. I find it a lot easier to explain and illustrate my ways of working in person rather than via email. I believe in a personal approach.
