One in seven couples choose sleep over sex on their wedding night

As the UK’s spring and summer wedding season begins, new research by Mattress Online suggests the traditional idea of a passion-filled wedding night doesn’t always match reality, with one in six couples (15%) saying they did not have sex after their big day.

To understand why, the bed experts also asked survey respondents what their reasoning was behind this. They also provided additional insight on the idea of the “wedding night” from Relationship Expert, Jenni Trent Hughes.

The findings show that exhaustion was by far the most common factor, with more than two in five (44%) of couples saying they were simply too tired after the celebrations. As weddings often involve early starts, long days, emotional highs, and late nights, rest is a more realistic priority than romance once newlyweds are in bed.

This is a more common reason for women, with almost half (48%) stating they were too tired to be intimate, compared to less than two in five (38%) of men.

Alcohol was the second most common reason, with one in five (19%) stating this as their main reason, suggesting that drinking during the festivities can also play a major role in dampening end-of-night plans.

This is more common with men, with more than one in five (22%) admitting they drank too much, compared to one in six (17%) women.

Meanwhile, one in seven (14%) couples said they felt stressed or overwhelmed, highlighting how the pressure of hosting guests, sticking to schedules, and managing emotions can continue long after the reception ends.

Together, the results suggest that for many newlyweds, the wedding night is less about expectations and more about recovering from one of the busiest days of their lives.

Jenni Trent Hughes, Relationship expert at Mattress Online, comments on these findings:

“Whilst tiredness and alcohol are often linked together as reasons for a lack of intimacy on the wedding night, they are actually two very different factors. Weddings are highly emotional, high-adrenaline days, and that level of intensity is often underestimated. Adrenaline itself is exhausting; it helps people get through the day, but there is often a natural ‘crash’ afterwards, similar to finishing a marathon.

“Alcohol can also play a role, as it is a physical depressant. While it may elevate mood during the celebrations, it slows the body down later on, which can further reduce energy and readiness.

“It’s therefore understandable that many couples simply aren’t in the mood after such an intense experience, with nervous systems having been on high alert for much of the day. In that context, the data showing high levels of tiredness and overwhelm reflects a very natural response.

“The idea of a ‘traditional wedding night’ is also less relevant today, as many couples are already intimate before marriage and may be adjusting to the emotional weight of the commitment itself. As a result, timing often shifts, with intimacy more likely once couples have had time to rest and recover from the intensity of the day.”
