The Pheasant Public House & Hotel wins big!

Just over a year after taking over The Pheasant Public House & Hotel, Karen Yeldham and her team are celebrating national success after being named Country Pub & Hotel of the Year 2026/27 by Luxury Travel Guide. The award recognises The Pheasant’s commitment to outstanding hospitality, customer service, accommodation and overall guest experience. Situated in the heart of the beautiful Essex countryside, close to the historic market town of Sudbury, the birthplace of Thomas Gainsborough, and just a short drive from the picturesque village of Long Melford, The Pheasant is perfectly placed for visitors looking to explore some of East Anglia’s finest attractions.

The Luxury Travel Guide judges were particularly impressed by the personal touch offered by The Pheasant, the consistency of its guest reviews and the strong sense of community surrounding the business.

The Pheasant has become known for combining the charm of a traditional country pub with the comfort of boutique-style accommodation. Guests enjoy en-suite bedrooms, a welcoming restaurant, outdoor dining and the popular Pizza Nights held every Monday and Friday. There is a carefully selected range of Real Ales, premium Lagers and Ciders and a Fine Wine list featuring carefully chosen wines from around the world.

Since taking over the business, the team have focused on creating a warm, friendly environment where every guest receives personal service and attention to detail.

'We are absolutely thrilled to receive this award' said Karen Yeldham who heads the team. 'When we took over The Pheasant, our vision was simple – to create a country pub and hotel where people felt at home. Every member of our team works incredibly hard to give guests a memorable experience, so this award belongs to all of them. To receive national recognition in such a short space of time is something we're enormously proud of. We would also like to thank our customers and the local community for their continued support. Without them, we simply wouldn't be where we are today'.

The Pheasant has also become a favourite destination for wedding guests. Located within easy reach of five of the region's most sought-after wedding venues, the hotel regularly welcomes bridal parties, families and friends attending celebrations throughout Essex and Suffolk. Many of these venues recommend The Pheasant because their own accommodation is limited, giving guests the opportunity to enjoy award-winning hospitality in a relaxed countryside setting before and after the big day.

Alongside welcoming overnight guests, The Pheasant has become a popular destination for local diners and visitors exploring the area, offering seasonal menus and a warm country pub atmosphere that keeps guests returning time and again.

Karen believes the award reflects more than just food and accommodation. 'Hospitality is about making people feel genuinely welcome. Whether someone is joining us for lunch, staying for a wedding, exploring the beautiful countryside or enjoying a weekend break, we want every guest to leave feeling they've been looked after like family. That's what makes this recognition so special.'

As The Pheasant continues to grow, the team remains committed to supporting local suppliers, working closely with neighbouring venues and showcasing the very best of country hospitality in Essex and Suffolk.
